Planetary architecture is a complicated business. What with mountains,
ravines, valleys and lakes, creating a whole new world can be a tiring
task indeed. If you're a would-be god or goddess and you're starting
to find this creation lark is taking it out of you then let your Amiga
do the job for you.
Scenery is a program that uses some very complicated
mathematics to create some very interesting results. The program uses
Fractal graphic techniques as used by super computers such as the Cray
to create random landscapes of almost unbelievable realism. Fractal
techniques are used extensively within the film industry to create
graphics for sci-fi films such as Star Trek. If you've seen any of the
more recent sci-fi films, chances are that the asteroids and other
planetary objects within these films were created on a super computer
using fractal graphic techniques.
The landscape generation takes a seed value which can either
be randomly generated or chosen by the user. Other options include the
ability to increase the height of the 'camera' from zero right upto
8000 feet. The water level and the height of mountains and hills can
also be selected from the pull down menus.
LandScape generation is reasonably fast when you consider the
Earth took millions of years to get to its current state! Seriously
though, the generation time of a landscape is actually very fast and
can take as little as five minutes for a scene to be rendered due to
efficient programming in pure 68000 assembler. Once a landscape has
been created, selecting Save Screen from the project menu will save
the screen in IFF format. Once saved, these can now be loaded into a
paint package such as Deluxe Paint or Aegis Images.
